Almagro

Almagro, the heart of Calatrava

Corral de Comedias in Almagro. View of the stage from the “cazuela” (upper balcony)In this Historical-Artistic Site dating from the 16th and 17th Centuries one can admire palaces, churches and convents that were built thanks to the knights of the Order of Calatrava, the seat of which is Almagro.

But, above all, Almagro is a city for theatre: its Plaza Mayor is a magnificent stage that transports its visitors back to another era. Visiting the 17th Century theatre, the Corral de Comedias, and the 19th Century Teatro Municipal we can see the evolution of theatre, while the Museo Nacional de Teatro provides us an overall view of theatre creation. And let us not forget the International Classical Theatre Festival in July.
