The provincial capital is a pleasant city for taking a stroll, with perfect dimensions for its inhabitants and visitors. The city centre is composed of a network of pedestrian streets that encourage business and visits to its main squares and monuments.
There are three distinguishable stages of growth in Ciudad Real: the Gothic period, with the churches of Santiago and San Pedro, the cathedral (Priory of the Spanish Military Orders) and the Puerta de Toledo; the modern era from the late 19th Century, with the patronage of new institutions: Palacio de la Diputación (Provincial Council Headquarters), Casino and Palacio Episcopal (Bishop’s Palace), to name a few; and in contemporary times, the capital is being decorated with numerous sculptures, many of which are a tribute to the most illustrious figure from La Mancha: Don Quixote. The cultural offering is being expanded with permanent exhibitions at the city’s museums and also with the possibility of participating in a multitude of activities.
